Finnish Language

The Finnish Saturday School in Bristol, as part of the global team of "Suomi Schools", provides language lessons for all ages and abilities.

The lessons take in all aspects of learning Finnish from social conversation through to using books, audio and video to improve grammar. The atmosphere is always very relaxed and enjoyable, a far cry probably from your language lessons at school!

For those students interested, there are also opportunities to attend residential courses in Finland and sit Finnish exams, in London. These too cater for both beginners and advanced students. Furthermore there is a library of Finnish material on site available to everyone.

The School is a good place to meet other Finns and friends of Finland over a cup of coffee and a chat and please come along even if you or members of your family do not attend a class. We also sell Finnish sweets and items of food during the mid morning break.

Finnish Culture

Not only do we teach the language, but we also incorporate the culture of Finland. We believe these two go hand in hand, as you cannot learn one without the other and we enjoy taking inspiration for our teaching from the Finnish way of life and the many festivals & celebrations.

Teaching Groups

Adults' Groups

At the moment we have three adult groups to cater for all levels of ability. You can freely choose which group would be best for you and then change happily should you feel you would be better off at another level. If you're not sure, just come and talk to us - we are always on hand to help you out!

Children's Group

Our children's group caters for ages 3 to 8 with both English and Finnish children very welcome. This group encourages the children to communicate in Finnish with the power of play. The group also teaches the children about Finnish culture and frequently bases lessons on themes such as Christmas, and Kalevala.

Mother & Toddlers' Group

Our Mother & Toddler's group allows the very smallest Finns and friends of Finland (under 3) to play whilst Mother's watch over whilst sipping Finnish Coffee. This is an excellent opportunity for the children to interact with others of similar backgrounds, and for Mum's to catch up.

Please note this is not a supervised class and parents are responsible for their toddlers at all times.

Finnish books for loan

Library in our school contains many Finnish books, both for adults and children. All of them are available for loaning.
